SLEMCO presents $20,000 check to URSI

The Undergraduate Research Summer Institute, URSI, at LSU Eunice accepted a donation from SLEMCO Wednesday, June 3, at its initial organizational meeting for the 2009 institute.

SLEMCO Board President, Jerry Meaux, Acadia Parish members Remie McGee and Buck Leonards, Ken Bordelon, Coordinator of Economic Development, and George Fawcett, Director of Marketing and Governmental Relations, were on hand to present the $20,000 gift to the LSUE Foundation.

Chancellor William Nunez, under whose tenure URSI was brought to the two-year university campus, noted that this gift will have a major impact on the program, now entering its thirteenth year at LSU Eunice. Seven faculty-student teams will explore diverse topics this summer ranging from research involving Cajun prairie ecosystems to radiologic technology, respiratory therapy and parenting issues.

A poster symposium where the results of their research will be detailed, is scheduled for early fall.

“Undergraduate research focuses on supporting collaborative research using student-faculty teams,” said LSU Eunice Foundation Director Madelaine Landry. “Many two-and four-year campuses promote its benefits for undergraduates across every academic discipline. With this additional funding from SLEMCO, we hope to enable our students to participate in more statewide and national symposiums with their peers from other institutions.”

Hernandez Learns New Strategies at NCTM Annual Meeting

Gloria Hernandez, Louisiana State University Eunice, Eunice, La. joined thousands of math educators from around the world to share and learn new concepts, strategies, and techniques in math education at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) 2009 Annual Meeting and Exposition in Washington, D.C., April 22–25.

NCTM’s Annual Meeting and Exposition is the largest gathering of math educators in the world. The conference featured more than 800 presentations, covering all grade levels and major math subjects and led by national and international education experts, with an emphasis on helping teachers strengthen skills and teaching methods necessary to prepare their students for the 21st century.

Bell, Greaud, Leslie Attend Workshop

Holly Bell, Angela Greaud, and Mary Leslie presented a workshop for the National Association for the Education of Young Children in November, 2008 in Dallas, Texas. The workshop, entitled “DAP in a Box! Implementing interest centers in traditional primary grade classrooms,” focused on aligning developmentally appropriate practices with state standards in core curriculum areas through the implementation of shoebox learning centers. Sample box activities designed by Ms. Bell, Mrs. Greaud, and Ms. Leslie were explored by participants in a hands-on type of setting. The three education professors await acceptance of their proposal to do a follow-up workshop for the national conference in 2009.

Holly Bell also attended the 54th Annual Convention West for the International Reading Association in February of 2009. The conference was held in Phoenix, Arizona. Ms. Bell and Ms. Leslie are both members of the IRA.

Gervais Presents at Eunice Rotary Club

Associate Professor and Coordinator of Fire and Emergency Services, Steve Gervais, provided members of the Eunice Rotary Club with information about computer forensics at their weekly lunch meeting on March 18, 2009. Gervais also demonstrated how forensics experts can recover files that had deleted from computer hard drives. He spoke earlier in the year to the Rotary Club about LSU Eunice's Crime Scene Management program.

Leslie Attends Gulf-South Summit on Service Learning

Mary Leslie, Associate Professor in Education and Developmental Studies, attended the Gulf-South Summit on Service Learning and Civic Engagement through Higher Education at the Baton Rouge Hilton Hotel March 25 through the 27th. Sponsored by LSU's Center for Community Engagement, Learning, and Leadership, the Summit offered a variety of presentations and workshops by faculty from across the country who involve their students in service projects as part of their course work.

Angela Greaud, Holly Bell and Leslie also attended and presented at the National Association for the Education of Young Children conference in Dallas in November 2008.

Jariel Publishes Papers in Journal of Forensic Science

Dr. Domingo Jariel published two articles in the Forensic Science entitled "Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry" and "Geological Materials."

The articles published in October, can be found on page 88 and page 562.

Forensic Science is a comprehensive reference source on the theory, techniques, and applications of the various forensic sciences.

Vidrine Published 100th Paper

Malcolm F. Vidrine, PhD, a professor of Biology at LSU at Eunice, has recently published his 100th refereed scientific paper.

The latest paper, entitled Unionicola (Walcottatax) Weni N. Sp. And U. (Walcottatax) Arcuatoides Vidrine (ACARI: Unioniclidae) from freshwater mussels in China, was coauthored by two undergraduate students who conducted research as part of LSUE’s Undergraduate Research Summer Institute and the publication was funded by research publication funds of the Division of Sciences and Mathematics through the LSUE Foundation. The paper appeared in the International Journal of Acarology this month.

Vidrine was presented a plaque (pictured above) by the Division of Science and Mathematics for successfully achieving 100 refereed scientific papers.

Sergeant Meets Allen at Conference

Carra Sergeant is currently serving a three-year term with the Women's Commission of Southwest Louisiana. Sergeant was appointed Registration Chair for the Women’s Commission of Southwest Louisiana’s Fall Conference for Women held in October in Lake Charles.

The conference also consisted of professional development and health workshops and featured keynote speaker, Debbie Allen (pictured above with Sergeant). The actress, writer, producer and Houston native spoke about women’s roles in society and how preconceived ideas are changed depending on circumstances.

Axelrod, Woods attend URISA Conference

Michael Axelrod and Sanford Wood attended the annual conference of the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA) in New Orleans on October 8th and 9th. URISA is a professional association of academics and government employees in the field of geographical information systems (GIS). Most of the members are mid-level civil-service employees who are responsible for the development and maintenance of large GIS databases for city, county, and state (provincial) governments in the United States and Canada.

Conference workshops covered a wide range of topics, from technical instruction on three-dimensional modeling of geographical data, to discussion of legal questions about public access to government data. Some of the most interesting workshops focused on the use of GIS to solve real-world problems in such areas as traffic congestion, parcel mapping, and uniform address maintenance for 911.

One of the most useful parts of the conference was the opportunity to network with people who are in a position to provide education and employment opportunities for LSUE graduates.

Pulling Appointed to National Leadership Team

In February, the National Writing Project (NWP) appointed David Pulling to a three year term on the National Leadership Team of NWP’s Rural Sites Network (RSN). Rural Sites Network is a national network that links K-16 teachers in rural areas together through the sites of the National Writing Project. The Team acts as a planning body to facilitate Writing Project programs for in-service, resource allocation, and professional development. Pulling will travel to Nebraska City, Nebraska the last weekend in July with co-leadership team members to lead the RSN’s annual Rural Sites Resource Development Retreat at the Lied Conference Center.

Angie Sonnier, Assistant Professor of Radiologic Technology, was inaugurated into office as President of the Louisiana Society of Radiologic Technologists during the Presidential Banquet. In her address to the membership, Sonnier pledged her commitment to the members affirming that their voices and concerns have been heard. In addition, she encouraged both technologists and students alike to continue their growth through involvement in their organization.

Chancellor William Nunez was recently appointed to serve a three-year term on the American Association of Community Colleges Commission on Academic, Student, and Community Development. Dr. Nunez's term began July 1 and will expire in 2011.

Hospitals Fund Program

Acadian Medical Center, Doctor's Hospital and Ville Platte Medical Center presented Dr. William Nunez and Dottie McDonald with a check for $54,000 to restart the Sonography program at LSUE. The three hospitals have committed to funding the program for three years and possibly longer. A search is currently underway for an instructor.

Cavell's Poetry to be Published

Two of Dr. Maura Cavell's poems, "Across the Sky's Field", "Detour Route", "Turn Play" and "After a Hard Rain" will be published in the January 2009 issue of Big Scream, an annual poetry magazine that has published Allen Ginsberg, Anne Waldman, William Burroughs lll, John Steinbeck Jr., and Charles Bukowski.

Guest Lecturer

Respiratory Therapy hosted Melissa Castille, a registered respiratory therapist from University Medical Center in Lafayette. Castille taught students about neonatal resuscitation and helped them to become certified to work in neonatal intensive care units. UMC donated the warmer being used in the photo to the LSUE Respiratory Therapy program.

Wellness Program

Debra Vidrine and Ville Platte Medical Center's Shane Darbonne monitor Vice Chancellor Arlene Tucker as she walks on the treadmill as part of her wellness assessment.

Vidrine has developed the campus wellness program as part of her endowed professorship. The endeavor includes completing a wellness inventory questionnaire and some physical measurements such as a finger stick for measuring glucose, cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Blood pressure, weight and fat index will also be measured on participants. Grip strength, flexibility testing, and a treadmill mini stress test will also be assessed.

These assessments will be accomplished and results compiled with the help of an exercise physiologist from the Wellness Center in Ville Platte. A medical summary report will be generated on each participant and used to plan a tailored exercise program that includes cardiovascular and weight training for interested individuals.

Louisiana Review Published

Volume Six of LSUE’s art and literature journal, The Louisiana Review, was published in Spring 2008. The yearly collection features fiction, poetry, and black & white art submitted by Louisiana artists, as well as artists from around the country.

The new volume features artwork by Stuart South, Julia Sevin, Brandon Jenkins, Wilbur Amy, and LSUE students Brenda Amy, Chris Gaspard, Ashley Cormier, and Hannah Johnson; fiction by Ryan Crider, Norman German, Gary Buslik, Jason Reeser, Suzanne Walsh, and Scottish novelist Ronald Frame; and poetry by Cindy Childress, Katie Bowler, Kenneth Elliott, Jared Pearce, Ellen Dailey, Jerry McGuire, Ronald Moran, and many others.

The Louisiana Review is edited by Dr. Billy Fontenot. Dr. Michael Alleman serves as poetry editor, and Dr. Diane Langlois serves as art editor.

Former VC Academic Affairs Passes

Funeral services for Dr. Donald O. Rogers of Cheneyville will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2, 2008 in the chapel at Hixson-Ducote Funeral Home of Bunkie with Brother Henry Prentice officiating. Interment will be in Manley Cemetery in Christian County, Missouri. Arrangements are under the direction of Hixson-Ducote Funeral Home of Bunkie.

Dr. Rogers died June 29, 2008 at his family home following a long illness. He was born on October 9, 1938 in Christian County, Missouri. Dr. Rogers served in the U.S. Navy from 1957 until 1959. He was later employed by Louisiana State University as a faculty member and administrator from 1968 until 1999. He was appointed Professor Emeritus upon his retirement in 1998.

He is survived by his wife, Mora Jeannine Stowe Rogers of Cheneyville; a son, Donald Scott Rogers of Lafayette; a daughter, Anne Rogers Reynolds of Tulsa, Oklahoma; four grandchildren, Katherine Mary Rogers, Donald Richard Rogers, Kenneth Michael Rogers, and Caleb John Reynolds; one brother, Gerald Lee Rogers of Springfield, Missouri; and two sisters, Loretta Schieffer of Oxnard, California, and Delores Ann Jantz of Springfield, Missouri.
