URISA is a professional association of academics and government employees in the field of geographical information systems (GIS). Most of the members are mid-level civil-service employees who are responsible for the development and maintenance of large GIS databases for city, county, and state (provincial) governments in the United States and Canada.

Conference workshops covered a wide range of topics, from technical instruction on three-dimensional modeling of geographical data, to discussion of legal questions about public access to government data. Some of the most interesting workshops focused on the use of GIS to solve real-world problems in such areas as traffic congestion, parcel mapping, and uniform address maintenance for 911.

One of the most useful parts of the conference was the opportunity to network with people who are in a position to provide education and employment opportunities for LSUE graduates.

http://www.urisa.org/

=====

Fontenot Speaks at Phi Theta Kappa Induction

Assistant Professor of English, Billy Fontenot, speaks to the 16 new inductees at the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society induction ceremony, September 26.
